Cricket Identification

What are crickets?

People often know crickets as insects that make annoying chirping sounds, and while this is true for some crickets, it's not true for all of them. The best way to identify a cricket is by its appearance.

Crickets are medium to large insects and are related to grasshoppers and katydids. Crickets have rounded heads, long antennae, and wings that rest on the side of the body at a downward angle. Their back pair of legs are larger and stronger than the rest and enable them to jump. Crickets are various colors depending on the species but are mostly brown, black, or a yellowish color.

Are crickets dangerous?

If you ever come across a cricket, danger shouldn't be your first thought. Crickets are not harmful to people, but inside of our homes can be detrimental to our property.

These pests are well-known for chewing holes inside blankets, clothing, and other fabric items. If you have plants in your house, cricket will feed on and damage them.

When crickets that chirp find a way into your home, the sounds they make can be quite annoying and frustrating to deal with day after day.

Why do I have a cricket problem?

Crickets are naturally drawn to our yards because they provide them with food, water, and shelter. Crickets are omnivores and feed on both plants and animals like other insects. Our gardens, flowerbeds, and lawns provide these pests with plenty of access to food and shady, cool places to rest.

Crickets primarily live outside, but if the weather becomes too hot, dry, or cold, those living nearby our homes like to move indoors to take advantage of the climate-controlled living conditions.

Where will I find crickets?

Crickets prefer to live in areas with high humidity levels. Outside, crickets live in areas that provide them with shady, damp shelter like wooded areas, fields, meadows, and our lawns and gardens.

If these insects ever decide to move into your Texas home, you can expect to find them in dark, quiet places like closets, utility rooms, under sinks, or in basements or crawlspaces.
